The most effective way to control mosquitoes is to eliminate or treat the standing water where mosquitoes lay their eggs and their larvae live and grow. Once an adult mosquito has emerged from its water-breeding site, mosquito sprays provide only temporary relief.
What to do?
If mosquitoes are a problem where you live, make sure that you are not providing breeding sites in your own yard. Most mosquitoes are not good flyers. If you are being bitten by them, they are probably breeding around your home or place of business. Many mosquitoes love to breed in all sorts of still water held in artificial containers. Mosquitoes need only a few tablespoons of water to breed and become a mosquito problem.
What you can do to control mosquitoes around your home or business.
Remove their habitat (where they live and breed)
Eliminate standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or any other container where mosquitoes can breed.
Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and potted plant trays at least once a week to destroy potential mosquito habitats.
Drain or fill temporary pools of water with dirt.
Keep swimming pool water treated and circulating.
Prevent your exposure to mosquitoes
Use EPA-registered mosquito repellents when necessary and follow label directions and precautions closely.
Use head nets, long sleeves and long pants if you venture into areas with high mosquito populations, such as salt marshes.
If there is a mosquito-borne disease warning in effect, stay inside during the evening when mosquitoes are active.
Make sure window and door screens are "bug tight."
Replace your outdoor lights with yellow "bug" lights which tend to attract less mosquitoes than ordinary lights. The yellow lights are NOT repellents, however.
When treating around your home or business to kill mosquitos. Make sure when you are spraying that you spray in a fan motion the under parts of all foliage around your structure. This is where they like to hide when they are not flying.
